Written Tycoon's Pippie Blows Them Away in Oakleigh Plate

Mark Smith - Saturday February 22

On a track playing all day to speed, with a jockey universally admired as one of the best front-running rider in the land, everything panned out for the speedster Pippie as the daughter of Written Tycoon led at every call to capture Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (100m) at Caulfield.

Winning nothing grander than the Group III Cockram Stakes over 1200 metres on the same track last August, Pippie flew the lids from her outside barrier under Linda Meech and had the field off the bit chasing when turning for home.Sustained speed Pippie claims the Oakleigh Plate - images Grant Courtney

The Zoustar gelding Zoutori whittled the margin down to half a length with the veteran Stratum gelding Crystal Dreamer three-quarters of a length back in third.

It was a second Group 1 for Meech after the 2015 Coolmore Classic on Plucky Belle and she becomes the first female jockey to win the Oakleigh Plate.

"It's awesome, especially to do it at Caulfield," Meech said.

"I was apprenticed here. It's really special."

Trained at Mornington by John and Chris Meagher, the 4yo daughter of Written Tycoon advanced her record to 5 wins and two seconds from 9 starts with earnings of $571,450.

It’s is a first Group 1 for Chris Meagher since entering into his partnership with his father John.

"I said last time in she went out a little girl and she's come back a grown-up woman," Chris Meagher told AAP.

"Today she was just pure speed and was too good. It's a magic result.Pippie models the winner's rug

"I said to Linda, 'handlebars down as soon as the gates open'. She's just pure speed and she's extra, extra special fresh."

Pippie was a $60,000 purchase out of the Eureka Stud draft at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

She is the first foal of the 6-time winning Ne Coupez Pas (USA) mare Coupe Express a half-sister to multiple stakes-placed Timely Truce from the family of dual Group II winner Merry Ruler.

Coupe Express has a 3yo filly by Spirit Of Boom named Boom Express and a yearling filly by Defcon.

She missed to her cover by Hellbent in 2018 before returning to Sprit Of Boom last spring..

Pippie becomes the 8th Group 1 winner for Woodside Park Stud's popular Written Tycoon who also sired last year's Oakleigh Plate winner Booker. Written Tycoon covered 136 mares at his 13th season last spring at a fee of $110,000.
