One To Watch - Gosford

Mark Smith - Thursday December 28

Tackling a competitive maiden over 1100m at Gosford at her career debut, the Shamus Award filly The Black Cloud won in the manner of a filly with a future.

Ridden by Jay Ford for Joe Pride, The Black Cloud settled outside the leader Octavian Treasure.

Taking the lead on straightening, the 3-year-old daughter of Shamus Award was untroubled to defeat the Russian Revolution filly Full Revolution by two lengths, with the Rubick filly Wezza a long-head back in third.

The Black Cloud a $100,000 Inglis Classic yearling

“I’ve done most of her trials, and I have liked her from the first time I sat on her,” Ford said.

“Joe has a good opinion of her. She is very natural, with good gate speed. She wanted to overdo it a bit outside the lead, where she was in a controlling position, which was a bit foreign.

“She put the race away comfortably, and it will not be the last you hear of her. She will be better again with experience.

“It was a very promising debut, and there’s a lot to look forward to.

A $100,000 purchase for Proven Thoroughbreds / Pride Racing from the Golden Grove draft at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, The Black Cloud, is the first foal of the 4-time winner Containment who hails from the family of 3-time Listed stakes-winner Janet Quill (Fan Letter).

The 3yo Shamus Award fillies have been firing of late. On Boxing Day, his daughter Quintessa was nosed out in the Group II Aukland Guineas.
