One to Watch – Wagga

Tara Madgwick - Monday July 24

The late Bede Murray was very good at looking after a nice two year-old filly and his son Paul has taken his time with this promising daughter of Russian Revolution, who made a winning debut at Wagga on Monday.

Cani Cancan was well fancied against older rivals in the 1000m maiden and charged home from back in the field out wide under Jean Van Overmeire to win by a long head running quicker time than the previous 1000m maiden won by Exceed and Excel colt Dublin.

A $50,000 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale purchase for her trainer Paul Murray from the Highgrove Stud draft, Cani Cancan is the third winner from three foals to race from Gone to Paris, a winning half-sister by Duporth to Group III placed Aristocratic Miss from stakes-winner Golden Pedigree.

Cani Cancan was a $50,000 MM National Yearling Sale purchase.

She as bred by Vicki Lourigan, who had a good result with her yearling Capitalist colt from Gone to Paris that sold for $220,000 at Inglis Classic this year.

Gone to Paris had a filly by Pierata last spring and was then back at Newgate to be covered by Tiger of Malay.

Cani Cancan was the 20th juvenile winner this season from 49 starters for Russian Revolution, 19 in Australia and one in NZ, and they include four stakes-winners Red Resistance, Libertad, Russian Alliance and The Instructor.

Russian Revolution has had a ground-breaking season with his first Group I winner Communist and is a clear leader on the second season sires table by earnings, winners and stakes-winners.

He is fully booked this spring at Newgate at a fee of $88,000.
