Prowling Rewarded for Consistency

 Placed in five of his last six starts, Prowling scored a well-deserved win over 1300m at Cranbourne on Wednesday.

Ridden by Thomas Stockdale for Greg Eurell, the 4yo son of Wolf Cry made the early running before handing up to Blake Shinn on Reigate.

Stockdale immediately eased Prowling off the fence to sit outside of Reigate.

Retaking control at the point of the turn, Prowling kept up a solid gallop to defeat the favourite Obfuscation (Holler) by a length and a half with a further three and a half lengths back to Commodity (Capitalist)  in third.

It was the first win in over a year for Prowling, who has placed at Sandown, Moonee Valley, Pakenham, Sale, and Ballarat in recent starts. His overall record advances to two wins, four seconds, and two thirds from 11 starts with earnings of $111,000.

“He flew the lids and travelled kindly,” Stockdale said.

“I thought it might upset him when he was tackled, but it didn’t. I got on his back and got a good drag into the race.    

“Although he hasn’t won in a while, he has been ever so consistent.

“I was confident from the half-mile onwards as he was travelling strongly. When I asked him to pick up, he gave me plenty and went to the line full of running.”

 Bred by his trainer, Prowling is a half-brother to stable stalwart Great Dutchess (Canford Cliffs), a 5-time winner of over $400,000.

His dam Great Dame (Danerich) won twice in a 4-start career and was fourth in the Group III The Vanity at Flemington behind Shopaholic, Mosheen and Angel Of Mercy.

Great Dame’s dam Star Opera (Salieri) is a half-sister to Celestial Option (Clear Choice), the dam of Group 1 VRC Australian Cup and group 1 MRC Toorak Handicap winner Roman Arch.

Like the recent Moonee Valley 55 Second Challenge winner Wolflands, Prowling comes from the first crop of 29 live foals by Larneuk Stud’s Wolf Cry.

The son of Street Cry (IRE) stands at a value fee of $3,300.
