JJ Atkins on the Cards for Blushing Tycoon

Mark Smith - Saturday May 22

Edged out by Biscayne Bay in the Group II SA Sires’ Produce Stakes at Morphettville, Blushing Tycoon returned to scale to a Melbourne Cup style reception when breaking his maiden at Flemington on Saturday.

Given a positive ride by Daniel Moor in the Racing.Com Plate (1400m), Blushing Tycoon took an eternity to level up with the leader Deprivation as both looked set to be swamped by the chasing pack at the 100m.

The son of Written Tycoon dug deep in the closing stages to defeat the No Nay Never gelding Deprivation by a long-neck with the Teofilo (IRE) colt Linas Legend a short-head back in third.

Purchased by First Light Racing / Busuttin Racing / Paul Willetts Bloodstock for $80,000 out of the Cornerstone Stud draft at the 2020 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Blushing Tycoon advanced his record to one win, a second and a third from four starts with earnings of $119,400.

Co-trainer Natalie Young, who trains in partnership with Trent Bussuttin, said the son of Written Tycoon might have earned his chance at a Group 1 at his next start.

“He was a little unlucky (in the SA Sires’ Produce) when one flew through on the inside and got him late,” Young said.

“He ate up that night and we thought we would have another stab in the dark.

“It looked like he might have finished fifth, but he just kept coming and coming. A great ride by Moor from barrier ten, he put him in a perfect position.

“He has a nomination for the (Group 1) JJ Atkins in a couple of weeks, so we will look at that and take it from there.”

Blushing Tycoon is the first foal to race out of the unraced Stravinsky (USA) mare Crimson Kiss.

A daughter of the Group II winner Crimson (Zabeel), Crimson Kiss is a sister to the stakes-winner and Group 1 VRC Oaks runner-up Miss Scarlatti and the stakes-placed A Fairy’s Kiss the dam of the old warrior Destiny’s Kiss, a 10-time stakes-winner of over $1.5 million.   Crimson is also a half-sister to Group II winner and multiple Group 1-placed Abidewithme (Redoute’s Choice).

Crimson Kiss has not had a live foal in the two seasons following Blushing Tycoon. She was covered by Trapeze Artist last spring.

Blushing Tycoon becomes the tenth 2yo winner of the season for the well-travelled Written Tycoon, who will debut at Yulong Stud in 2021 at a fee of $165,000.
